Bosch Therm 660EF/660EFO Remote Controller

The Bosch Therm 660EF/660EFO Wired Remote Controller, part number BRC01US is specifically designed for the Bosch Therm 660EF/660EFO units.  The wired remote gets wired to the Bosch 660EF/660EFO unit using 18 ga wire and can be installed up to 300' maximum away from the heater.

The wired remote should be installed in a location that is accessed easy from the main point of hot water use such as on the bathroom wall.  The default setting for the 660EF/660EFO is 120° F.  For most residential applications, the recommended setting is 120° F. 125° water is scalding and is very dangerous.

The Bosch Therm 660EF/660EFO gas tankless water heaters come with wired, marked connectors in the unit by the main control board.  The wired connectors are marked, 120°, 130°, 140° and 160°.  You must have the remote controller to achieve the 160° temperature.

The remote control comes with many special options.  The remote control will give error codes on the display in the event of a problem (refer to the service manual or contact Bosch Technical Support for error codes and troubleshooting).  The upper limit of the hot water supply temperature can be changed to 100°F, 105°F, 110°F, 115°F, 120°F, 125°F, 130°F, 135°F, 140°F and up to 160 with the remote control.  There is also a unique flow meter alarm setting on the remote control.

The flow meter alarm setting can be used to set a desired amount of gallons of water maximum that is normally used.  As an example:  say your bath tub holds 50 gallons of hot water.  You can press and hold the flow meter alarm until it starts flashing and then set the remote to a maximum of 42 gallons of water.  So when you go and fill the bathtub with hot water and once the remote senses it has flowed 42 gallons of water an alarm will sound and then you would have to physically go and shut the water off at the source.  The alarm will stop after 10 seconds.

Bosch 345/450 ESR Tankless Recirculating Heaters

The gas tankless recirculating heaters, Bosch 345 ESR and the Bosch 450 ESR are temperature modulated and have electronic ignition.  The ESR stands for Electronic ignition, Sealed combustion and Recirculating.  These recirculating heaters are designed and approved for heating and recirculating potable water in conjunction with an indirect storage tank.

The 345/450 ESR are not approved or designed for closed loop heating applications.  The ESR units are not a tankless heater as they have no flow switch to respond to flow.  Instead it’s a recirculating water heater designed for tank loading applications.  When an AquaStat (not included) hooked up to a tank tells the ESR that water needs to be brought back up to temperature, the ESR will tell a circulator (not included) to turn on to create flow through the heater to reheat the water in the tank.   Please refer to the installation and applications manual.

The Bosch 345 ESR recirculating heater is a 95K BTU unit and can deliver 3.5 GPM at a 45 degree rise.  Efficiency is 82%

The Bosch 450 ESR recirculating heater is a 120K BTU unit and can deliver 4.5 GPM at a 45 degree rise.  Efficiency is 81%

The temperature control range for both heaters can be set anywhere from 115°F (45°C) - 190°F (90°C)

The 345/450 ESR comes with a standard ¾” pressure relief valve.

The 345/450 ESR has a special built-in freeze prevention cycle and is controlled by a sensor.  Freeze protection is always assured by the operation of the appliance.  If the primary NTC (temperature) sensor detects temperatures 9°F below the selected temperature, the appliance starts on minimum power until the sensor reads selected temperature.  In the case of minimum set point temperature then it will start at 41°F.  The use of non-potable additives like glycol is not approved.

The Bosch 345 ESR and the Bosch 450ESR must be installed indoors according to the provided installation manual.  The 345/450 ESR is NOT approved for outdoor installations.

The Bosch 345/450 ESR recirculating heaters must be vented in accordance with the installation manual and require Category III 3” stainless steel sealed venting for the exhaust.  These heaters are direct vent units and must be vented directly to the outside in accordance with the installation manual.  These heaters cannot be combination vented with any other appliance.  The intake should be taken from the outside and 3”PVC or other material can be used only for the intake air.

The Bosch 345/450 ESR recirculating heaters are gas specific so they cannot be converted from one gas type to another.

Bosch Therm 520PN & 520HN vs Bosch Therm 660EF

This blog entry compares the Bosch Therm series 520PN & 520HN models to the Bosch Therm 660EF heater.  The Bosch Therm 520PN & 520HN gas tankless water heaters are 117,000 BTUs as the Bosch Therm 660EF is 140,000 BTUs.  These tankless water heaters are designed for 1 major application at a time such as 1 shower at a time or maybe 2 small sinks at once. They all are available in natural gas or propane models.

The Bosch Therm 520 PN, 520HN and the 660EF all take thier combustion air from the space where they are installed in.  You will want to make sure you refer to the installation manual for these units and make sure you have enough combustion air for the area where these are to be installed.  You can always consult a HVAC technician to calculate and make sure you have enough air supply.  These units should NEVER be installed in a bathroom or bedroom where the door is normally kept closed as the heaters while running would deplete the oxygen from the room causing illness and death.  This statement is on the front of the heaters and also noted in the installation manual.  The National Fuel Gas Code states this also but the installer would also want to go by local code.

The Bosch Therm 520PN has a standing pilot light and is a naturally drafting unit as the P stands for standing pilot and the N stands for naturally drafting.  The Bosch Therm 520HN has a hydro generator ignition and is a naturally drafting unit as the H stands for Hydro generated and the N stands for naturally drafting.  The Bosch Therm 660EF requires power and plugs into 120V outlet.  The 660EF has electronic ignition and is fan assisted which makes it a direct vent unit and the E stands for electronic ignition and the F stands for fan assisted.

The Bosch Therm 520PN and the Bosch Therm 520HN both use an exhaust vent of 5" diameter double wall type B-vent and should be vented vertically up through the roof for a minimum of 6' to the raincap.  There is a vertical vent kit called the H/P VVT Vertical Vent kit and has all the material for penatrating the roof.  If venting the 520PN or 520HN up through the roof is not an option then the heaters could be vented horizontally out the sidewall but MUST use the AQ4 Powervent kit.  The 660EF is a direct vent unit and requires to be vented verically or horizontally with 3" stainless steel sealed vent pipe.  The 660EF requires a 660EF adapter first on top of the heater to accomadate the venting.

There is also the Bosch Therm 660EFO Outdoor unit and it is just the same as the 660EF but is designed specifically for outdoor installations.  The 660EFO has a special top that it exhausts out of and also has the electronic ignition and is fan assisted.  The Bosch Therm 660EF/EFO heaters plug into a 120V outlet.

Bosch Therm Tankless Water Heaters are LOW NOx

Bosch Therm Units meet low NOx - Gas Tankless Water Heaters

Bosch Thermotechnology North America, a leading provider of energy efficient water heaters, heating and air conditioning comfort systems as well as high quality solar thermal systems for commercial and residential use, announced today the following Therm tankless products from Bosch meet recently enacted Low emission (NOx) requirements passed by utility regulatory agencies in California and Vermont: Therm C 1210 ES/ESC; C 1050 ESC; 950 ES; 940 ES/ESO and 830 ES. All models offer NOx emissions of 14 ng/J or 20 ppm or less. California and Vermont are currently the first two states to enact the 14 ng/J or 20-ppm NOx level.

In accordance with the new guidelines as published in new Air Quality Management District (AQMD) ordinances, the following Bosch models will no longer be sold nor allowed for installation in areas that are subject to these AQMD ordinances: Therm 520 PN/HN; 330 PN, and 660 EF/EFO. AQMD’s are regulatory agencies supported by state government to help control and preserve air quality standards for a given area.

Therm units from Bosch include a unique design using a wide flame pattern and secondary dilution air that results in a lower flame temperature during the heating process. Combined with condensing technology, which utilizes a secondary heat exchanger to capture more heat from the exhaust for preheating incoming cold water, these models offer an attractive tankless water heating option that meets future code requirements today while offering optimal efficiency.

The complete Therm line from Bosch features models with updated software that delivers performance-enhancing characteristics including a minimum activation flow rate of 0.5 gallons per minute (GPM) and the ability on many models to cascade up-to-24 units for larger commercial applications. The Therm line includes ENERGY STAR® rated models, powered by natural gas or propane, which have an industry best 15-year warranty.

HVAC & plumbing professionals and affected homeowners in California and Vermont are encouraged to check with local regulatory agencies to ensure compliance of all tankless units with the new low NOx requirements.

Bosch Wireless Remote Control TSTAT2

The Bosch Wireless Remote Control TSTAT2 for the Bosch Therm and Protankless models 635ES / 635ESO / 715ES / C800ES / C920ES / C920ESC / C830ES / C940ES / C940ESO / C950ES /    C1050ES / C 1210ES / C 1210ESC / Integra 500 / Evolution 500 allows you to program your Bosch tankless gas water heater to a comfortable and safe temperature from around your home from a distance of up to 98 ft.

The TSTAT2 remote is particularly useful if you own a jacuzzi or hot tub that requires a hotter water temperature than you normally desire for regular shower use.

Please note that the electrical control board of the older Bosch 635ES / 635ESO heaters must be removed and opened in order to install the wireless receiver circuit board to enable the use of the TSTAT2 Wireless Remote Control.

The Newer Bosch models, 715ES / C800ES / C920ES / C920ESC / C830ES / C940ES / C940ESO / C950ES / C1050ES / C 1210ES / C 1210ESC / Integra 500 / Evolution 500 tankless water heaters have been redesigned to make the installation of the wireless receiver circuit board much easier. The circuit board is basically a plug and play unit.

The TSTAT2 controls the temperature of your water heater and does not have a reset button.   If the heater has an error then a code will be on the display of the heater and the user has to go to the heater to reset it from there and should document the error and then see if it returns after resetting.

The TSTAT2 Wireless Remote Control for Bosch 635ES / 635ESO / 715ES / C800ES / C920ES / C920ESC / C830ES / C940ES / C940ESO / C950ES / C1050ES / C 1210ES / C 1210ESC / Integra 500 / Evolution 500 features the following:

  • LCD displays temperature, error codes and functions

  • Alkaline AA LR6 2x1.5V battery power 915 MHz
  • Security lock function
  • IP X6 Protection
  • Priority function - temperature cannot be modified by other user interface when water is running
Don't forget to periodically change the two AA batteries in your Bosch wireless TSTAT2 thermostat as they will certainly corrode over time. The batteries in TSTAT2 thermostats that are kept in bathrooms will corrode faster than in other less humid environments, such as kitchens. Your batteries should be checked yearly for any signs of corrosion and replaced every five years in any case.

Bosch Protankless C800ES Condensing unit

The Bosch Protankless C800ES Condensing tankless water heater is a top performance, fully condensing gas tankless water heater from Bosch. This 199,000 BTU heater is designed for residential applications and can deliver hot water up to 140 degrees F with a 10.5 GPM flow rate.  Not approved for space heating applications.
This Energy Star approved tankless water heater can produce enough hot water for 2-3 major applications in most homes.

Unlike traditional non-condensing models, condensing technology captures heat from the exhaust gas and uses it to preheat the incoming cold water. This increases efficiency and reduces emissions -- well ahead of the 2012 Low NOX emissions standards set by SCAQMD (California -- South Coast Air Quality Management District).

The Bosch C800ES features an electronic ignition system and can vent through either 3 inch or 4 inch diameter PVC vent pipe either through the side wall or up through the roof.  A 3" PVC concentric vent kit is available for venting vertical or horizontal and allows the unit to be vented and also have its intake air from the outside through one hole.

The Bosch C800ES does not come with the built-in Freeze Protection kit but it is available as an accessory.  The C800ES also does not come with an external water filter screen but is also available as an accessory.  The Bosch C800ES does come with a standard 3/4" PRV.  The Bosch Therm C 1050 ES tankless water heater is about the same as the C800ES except that it comes with the freeze protection kit.    The Bosch Integra 500 is also about the same as the C800ES and the C1050ES and it comes with the freeze protection, 3/4" PRV and the external water filter screen.  All three tankless heaters are 199,000 BTUs and have the same temperture rise.

The freeze prevention kit is designed to provide protection for the water heater down to approximately 5°F for short term conditions only. It will not protect the appliance in areas where the temperature is routinely expected to be below freezing.  The freeze prevention kit will not protect plumbing outside the appliance from freezing.

The Bosch C800ES comes with a limited 15 year warranty on the heat exchanger and 5 years on all other parts.  Service and labor costs are not covered.

7 Ways to Heat Domestic Hot Water with Bosch Products

Are you looking to heat your domestic hot water (DHW) for your showers, sinks, dishwasher and washing machine? If so, Bosch offers 7 different ways to achieve this goal in highly efficient ways! This blog entry provides a detailed comparison of the different ways Bosch can help you heat your DHW.

1) Bosch Therm gas and propane condensing tankless water heaters. Bosch offers several models of condensing tankless water heaters ranging from 175,000 BTUs up to 225, 000 BTUs. These electronic-ignition tankless water heaters have a secondary condensing heat exchanger that reclaims heat and redirects this heat back to the water thus reducing the exhaust temperature. As a result the exhaust temperature is cool enough to be exhausted via 3" or 4" PVC or CPVC piping. These heaters are generally about 92% efficient and can produce enough hot water for 2 to 3 showers at a time, depending on where you live.

2) Bosch Therm gas and propane non-condensing tankless water heaters. Bosch offers several models of non-condensing tankless water heaters ranging from 75,000 BTUs up to 199,000 BTUs. On the higher end from 175,000 BTUs up to 199,000 BTUs the Bosch tankless water heaters have an electronic ignition and require special 3" or 4" stainless steel venting. These heaters are about 82% efficient and are a great solution for most families. On the lower end the heaters range from 75,000 to 117,000 BTUs and have either a standing pilot light or use Bosch's patented Hydro Ignition system. These heaters are perfect for "off-grid" installations or areas with frequent electricity outages. In the mid-range Bosch offers both indoor and outdoor electric-ignition 140,000 BTU heaters that require 3" stainless steel vent pipe.

3) Bosch Tronic electric tankless water heaters. The Bosch Tronic line of electric tankless water heaters are available both in whole-house models (Tronic 5000 Series) or in point-of-use models (Tronic 3000 Series). Both the Tronic 5000 and 3000 Series heaters are tankless and will produce endless hot water. Be sure to verify that your electric supply meets the minimum requirements for these heaters. The Amperage is the key.

4) Bosch Ariston Pro Ti electric mini-tank water heaters. The Ariston Pro Ti line of mini tanks range from 2.5 gallons up to 7 gallons. Like a regular hot water tank, these mini-tank heaters keep water hot and ready for use in highly efficient glass-lined tanks. These heaters are perfect for point-of-use applications, but will generally be insufficient for showers. The heaters plug directly into a 110 wall outlet and draw only 12.5 Amps.

5) Bosch Compress 3000 HP 200-1 heat pump. The 50 gallon Bosch Compress heat pump is a great addition to the Bosch line of domestic hot water heating products. This ultra efficient water heater uses technology similar to an EnergyStar qualified refrigeratorRather than taking heat from the inside of the appliance and moving it outside as a refrigerator does; the Bosch heat pump technology takes heat from outside the appliance and uses it to heat the water!

6) Bosch Greenstar Combi Boilers. Bosch offers two Greenstar Combination ("Combi") boilers ranging from 100,000 BTUs up to 151,000 BTUs. Each of these two Combi boilers can heat hot water for space heating as well as provide for a domestic hot water loop. These wall-hung, gas-fired condensing boilers are highly efficient. They come ready for natural gas and include a kit to swap over to propane use. Heating DHW with a Greenstar Combi boiler is perfect for homes that require hot water for their space heating needs.

7) Bosch Greenstar Boilers with Indirect Tanks. The Bosch Greenstar lineup of space heating boilers includes four gas-fired condensing boilers ranging from 57,000 BTUs up to 151,000 BTUs. Heating DHW with a Bosch Greenstar space heating boiler is simple when used in combination with a Bosch SST Stainless Steel Indirect Storage tank. Bosch offers four models of indirect storage tanks ranging from 40 gallons up to 119 gallons. The boiler heats a coil that runs through the indirect storage tank which in turn heats the potable water in the tank.

With seven different ways to heat DHW, Bosch offers a solution for just about any application or need.

Bosch Integra 500 Tankless Water Heater

The Bosch Integra 500 Condensing tankless water heater is a top performance, fully condensing gas tankless water heater from Bosch. This 199,000 BTU heater is designed for residential applications and can deliver hot water up to 140 degrees F with a 10.5 GPM flow rate.  Not approved for space heating applications.
Bosch Integra 500 Condensing Tankless Water Heater

This Energy Star approved tankless water heater can produce enough hot water for 2-3 major applications in most homes.

Unlike traditional non-condensing models, condensing technology captures heat from the exhaust gas and uses it to preheat the incoming cold water. This increases efficiency and reduces emissions -- well ahead of the 2012 Low NOX emissions standards set by SCAQMD (California -- South Coast Air Quality Management District).

The Bosch Integra 500 features an electronic ignition system and can vent through either 3 inch or 4 inch diameter PVC vent pipe either through the side wall or up through the roof. A concentric venting option is available.

The Bosch Integra 500 comes with built-in Freeze Protection and is the same as the Bosch Therm C 1050 ES tankless water heater except that it also comes with a 3/4" PRV and an External Water Filter. The Integra 500 has a white cover and the Bosch C 1050ES has a silver cover.  Both heaters are 199,000 BTUs and have the same temperture rise.

The Bosch C800ES is the same as the Bosch Integra 500 and the Bosch Therm C 1050 ES tankless water heater except that it comes with a 3/4" PRV and it does not come with built-in freeze protection.  The External Water Filter is optional, but recommended.  The freeze prevention kit is designed to provide protection for the water heater down to approximately 5°F for short term conditions only. It will not protect the appliance in areas where the temperature is routinely expected to be below freezing.  The freeze prevention kit will not protect plumbing outside the appliance from freezing.

The Bosch Integra 500 comes with a limited 15 year warranty on the heat exchanger and 5 years on all other parts.  Service and labor costs are not covered.

Greenstar Combi 100 & 151 Gas Fired Condensing Boilers

The New Bosch Greenstar Combi 100 (100K BTU) & Bosch Greenstar Combi 151 (151K BTU) Gas Fired Condensing Boilers are new to the American market but have been in use for years in Europe.  The combi 100 is 98.5% efficient as the combi 151 is 96.5% efficient.  The new Bosch Greenstar condensing boiler line is engineered to offer the ideal solution for residential heating and hot water needs at an affordable price, without compromising quality or fuel economy.

"Combi" (combination) unit with space heating and integrated water heating in one highly efficient, compact unit. With special insulation to ensure ultra quiet operation and the exclusive keypad safety lock feature to prevent unwanted tampering with heating controls, this unit is the ideal "green" unit.

  • Limited lifetime heat exchanger and 5-year parts & labor warranty
  • All models available as NG or LP
  • Special insulation ensures ultra-quiet operation
  • Compact dimensions and built-in frost protection offer flexibility for location of installation
  • ECO mode for energy saving fuel consumption
  • Exclusive safety feature - keypad safety lock prevents unwanted tampering with heating controls.

  • Each unit features an ASME approved Al-Si heat exchanger constructed of advanced Magnesium-Aluminum-Silicon alloy - offering increased flexibility versus traditional stainless steel. They are equipped with highly durable heating blocks that are corrosion resistant and designed to optimize clean burning combustion over an extra large surface area, which requires minimal servicing and reliance on spare parts during the boiler’s lifetime.  The Greenstar units come set for Natural Gas (NG) and there is a conversion kit that is included with the unit if it has to be converted to Liquid Propane (LP).

The Greenstar Combi units are designed for heating such as radiant floor heat or baseboard heating with multiple zones depending on the size of the unit and also for domestic hot water (DHW).

The combi 100 unit besides being used for heating applications is also designed for DHW for 1 major application at a time - 72 degree rise at 2.4 gpm while the combi 151 could possibly do 2 applications at a time and will deliver - 72 degree rise at 4 gpm.

Depending on the size of your home and the heating and DHW applications you are looking for, you would need to get an HVAC or gas technician to size the unit properly as they would have to factor in,  size of home, insulation "R" factor, windows, etc..

Gas Conversion of Pro Gas Tankless Water Heaters

Some of the Bosch Professional gas tankless water heaters can be converted from one gas type to the next, i.e. from Natural Gas (NG) - Liquid Propane (LPG) and also from LPG - NG.  The Gas Conversion Kit, part #8719002176 includes a jumper for placement on the control board, a set of instructions for calibrating the gas and air mix and also some stickers to be placed on the heater stating it has been converted.

The tools required for the gas conversion are:
    • Flat and Phillips Screwdrivers
    • #40 torx driver
    • Digital CO2 Gas Combustion Analyzer
    • This procedure must be performed by a licensed gas technician
The Bosch Professional Non-condensing heaters such as the 940ES/940ESO/830ES/715ES/635ES and the Evolution 500 CAN be converted using the gas conversion kit.

All of the Bosch Therm condensing heaters such as the C1210ESC/C1210ES/C1050ES/C950ES/C800ES and Integra 500 CANNOT be converted as the units have a special plate built into the burner tray.  This extra plate in the burner tray was designed and instlled to give the heater the ability to be installed at higher elevations up to 8000'.

Also the Bosch Therm 660EF/660EFO/520PN/520HN/425HN/425EF/330PN CANNOT be converted as they are not designed at all for gas conversion.

    Bosch Tronic 5000 WH17 & WH27

Bosch Tronic 5000 WH 17 & WH27 Electric Tankless Water Heaters

Ideal for replacing your electric storage tank water heater. The Bosch Tronic 5000 WH17 & WH27 electric whole house tankless water heaters are compact and powerful and can be installed virtually anywhere inside the home. Advantages include endless hot water, reduced electricity costs and substantial space savings.

Designed to replace a 20 - 40 gallon electric tank. The Bosch Tronic WH17 &  Bosch Tronic WH27 electric tankless water heaters are built to last. They have Plastic Polymer Modules and brass fittings. Each heater module is protected by an electro-mechanical thermal cut-out. If the temperature of any of the heater modules gets too high (over 195 degrees), then the cut-out will trip and cut the power to that heater module. If the cut-out trips, it must be reset while the circuit breakers are off. If you are not comfortable or qualified to perform this task, consult the original installer or a licensed electrician. This cut-out will only trip in exceptional circumstances. These small electric tankless water heaters can be installed virtually anywhere in the home and, of course, produce an endless supply of hot water.

There are many changes in the new Bosch Tronic 5000 WH17 and the WH27 compared to the older models Powerstream Pro RP17PT and RP27PT.

The new improvements for the Bosch Tronic 5000 WH17 and the WH27are:
    • The units overall height is shortened by 4 inches due to reconstruction and placement of the main PCB board in the bottom of the unit.  (WH17 PCB Board #8-738-701-732, WH27 PCB Board #8-738-701-738).
    • The Heating element assembly modules inside the unit have been redesigned to change the flow of the water in the modules to a different angle so as to not allow the mineral deposits to build up on the elements.
    • There has been new single triac and dual triac PCB boards attached to the top of the heating modules as to give the heater more sensibility and maintain a more consistant heat.  (Single Triac PCB #8-738-701-733, Dual Triac PCB #8-738-701-723).
    • The Thermal Cutouts on the top of the heating modules have been redesigned to trip at a little lower temperature of 195 degrees F to keep the elements from being damaged and overheating and hurting the piping and modules.

The minimum activation rate required for the unit to activate. (Activation rates: WH17 = 0.6 GPM, WH27 = 0.8 GPM).

The WH17 & WH27 are designed for cold potable water only. These water heaters are not designed for preheated water or recirculation applications. Increase flow rate where ever possible if water is coming out too hot.

Verify incoming water supply is at least 30psi. For people on well systems, the recommended pressure range is 30-50psi.

Maximum flow rates for each unit are as follows. WH17 = 2.3gpm, WH27 = 3.5gpm.
